Where it started

The moment

In February 2026, as UCL celebrated 200 years of impact, innovation and influence, it launched Here, it will happen, the most ambitious philanthropic and engagement campaign in its history. The launch event would set the tone for everything that followed, bringing together some of the university’s most important donors, alumni, advocates, academic leaders and partners for an evening designed to build belief in UCL’s future.

Hosted at the British Museum, the event marked the beginning of a new chapter for the institution and a public invitation to help shape its next 200 years.

For UCL, this was far more than a campaign launch. It was an opportunity to bring people closer to the ideas, research, students and communities that make the university extraordinary, while creating a shared sense of excitement, possibility and purpose around what could be achieved together.

Where it needed to get to

The challenge

Our relationship with UCL began with a short consultancy engagement focused on reviewing event team capacity ahead of an exceptionally busy period. What started as a planning and resourcing exercise quickly evolved into a much broader partnership as the scale and significance of the campaign launch became clear.

This was not simply a gala dinner. It was a defining institutional moment that needed to bring together donors, alumni, advocates, academic leaders and university stakeholders around a shared vision for the future. The audience included some of UCL’s most valued supporters and long-standing champions, many of whom would play an important role in the campaign’s success over the years ahead.

The challenge lay in transforming that ambition into reality within a relatively compressed timeframe. Invitations needed to be developed and issued quickly, stakeholders aligned, content created, partnerships coordinated and every detail considered through the lens of the wider campaign.

The British Museum provided an extraordinary blank canvas on an impressive scale. Realising the vision required close collaboration between the UCL team, Johnson Banks, Event Concept and a significant network of specialist partners. Together, we needed to transform one of the world’s most iconic cultural spaces from a museum by day into a spectacular setting for a campaign launch and gala dinner by night, seamlessly bringing together storytelling, content, branding, production, logistics and guest experience.

As the project developed, so did our role. What began as consultancy and advice evolved into a trusted strategic and delivery partnership. By the time guests arrived at the British Museum, Assemble was operating not as an external agency, but as an extension of the UCL team, working alongside colleagues across advancement, fundraising, stewardship, alumni relations and communications towards a shared goal.

How we approached it

The thinking

From the outset, we believed this experience needed to achieve more than inform guests about a campaign. It needed to make them feel part of it.

Working alongside the UCL Advancement team, we helped develop the creative direction, audience journey and experience design for the evening. Central to this was the development of an emotional journey map that charted how guests would move through moments of inspiration, reflection, pride, optimism and celebration throughout the event.

Every aspect of the experience was considered through that lens. Content, staging, performances, films, speeches, environment and guest experience all needed to work together to tell a single story about UCL’s impact on the world and its ambitions for the future.

The campaign identity, Here, it will happen, became the thread running throughout the evening. Rather than focusing solely on fundraising, the event showcased the people, ideas and discoveries shaping the future, helping guests understand not only why UCL matters, but why their support matters too.

This approach was only possible because of the collaborative nature of the partnership. Rather than working at arm’s length, we became embedded within the project team, contributing strategic thinking, creative development and delivery expertise while benefiting from the UCL team’s deep understanding of their audiences, stakeholders and ambitions. The result was a genuinely shared process where decisions were shaped together and every aspect of the experience remained rooted in the university’s vision.

What we delivered

The experience

Guests arrived at the British Museum for an evening designed to immerse them in the breadth, ambition and impact of UCL. The experience began with a drinks reception before moving into a carefully choreographed dinner programme beneath the iconic glass roof of the Great Court. Throughout the evening, storytelling sat at the heart of the experience, combining campaign films, beneficiary stories, live performances, academic voices and moments of celebration to create a powerful and emotionally engaging narrative.

The architecture of the venue became part of the storytelling itself. Large-scale projections transformed the Reading Room and surrounding spaces, bringing campaign themes and visual content to life in ways that felt both spectacular and purposeful. The environment reflected the scale of UCL’s ambition while creating moments of genuine wonder and discovery for guests.

Student performers, beneficiary stories and powerful content brought the university’s work to life, while moments of interaction and celebration helped guests feel connected to the wider UCL community. Research, innovation, student success and alumni achievement were woven throughout the evening, creating an experience that felt unmistakably UCL.

Behind the scenes, Assemble led guest communications, registration, seating strategy, stakeholder coordination, venue liaison, content development, supplier management, briefing materials and on-site delivery. Working alongside Event Concept, we helped bring together the many creative and operational components required to deliver a seamless experience from beginning to end.

What it achieved

The impact

The event succeeded in launching more than a campaign. It launched a sense of momentum. Guests left with a clearer understanding of UCL’s ambitions and the role philanthropy and engagement could play in helping the institution address some of society’s greatest challenges. The evening created opportunities for meaningful conversations, strengthened existing relationships and generated enthusiasm around the campaign’s future direction.

The response extended far beyond the room itself. Conversations continued across alumni networks, social media and the wider university community in the weeks that followed. The launch created energy, visibility and advocacy at a crucial moment in UCL’s bicentenary year.

For Assemble, the project also marked the beginning of a relationship that has continued to grow. What started as a focused consultancy assignment developed into a trusted partnership built on shared ambition, openness and mutual confidence. Working closely with the UCL team allowed us to contribute far beyond traditional event delivery, bringing together strategy, creative thinking, content development and operational leadership in support of a common goal.

Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the relationship that developed along the way. We had the privilege of working with a talented, knowledgeable and incredibly welcoming team who trusted us to become part of the project, rather than simply deliver against a brief. As the months progressed, the distinction between client and partner often felt less important than the shared commitment everyone had to making the launch a success.

We learned a huge amount from the people around us and remain grateful for the trust, openness and generosity shown throughout the project. It is a relationship that continues today and one that reflects the way we most enjoy working: as an extension of a client’s team, bringing different expertise together around a common goal.

Where it led

What happened next

The British Museum launch was never intended to be a standalone moment. It was designed to become the foundation for a global journey. In the months that followed, the campaign moved beyond London to engage alumni, supporters and advocates around the world. The challenge became translating the excitement, pride and sense of possibility created at the British Museum into experiences that would resonate equally strongly in New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Delhi and beyond.

The core story remained consistent: a belief that the next generation of breakthroughs, discoveries and opportunities will happen here. But each experience needed to reflect the culture, community and relationships that existed within its local audience.

This is where we believe event strategy becomes most powerful. Successful international engagement is not about repeating the same event in different cities. It is about carrying forward the same ambition while creating experiences that feel authentic and relevant to the people in the room.

Building on the foundations established in London, UCL has continued to bring its campaign story to life for audiences around the world, creating moments that connect alumni and supporters to the university’s ambitions while strengthening their sense of belonging to a global community.

The British Museum launch introduced Here, it will happen to the world. What followed was the opportunity to build a truly global movement around it, strengthening relationships, creating advocates and bringing UCL communities together across continents in support of a shared vision for the future.

Because the most important events are never just events. They are the beginning of what happens next.

In their words

“Launching Here, it will happen in UCL’s bicentenary year was a defining moment for our university. We wanted to do more than announce a campaign. We wanted people to experience the ambition, optimism and sense of possibility at its heart, and to feel inspired to be part of what comes next. Assemble played an important role in helping us realise that ambition. Their creativity and production expertise helped translate our vision into experiences that were bold, engaging and unmistakably UCL, from our flagship launch at the British Museum to celebrations with our international community.

The response from our alumni, donors and friends has been wonderful. We’ve created real energy and momentum around the campaign, and Assemble’s contribution helped us begin this important chapter in a way that felt both ambitious and deeply human.”
