UCL’s community stretches far beyond London. Its alumni, supporters, partners and advocates live and work across every continent, and the campaign needed to feel just as relevant to them as it did to those who attended the launch event.
The answer was not a roadshow. It was a global series of carefully curated and considered experiences that would bring the campaign to life in cities including New York, Paris, Beijing, Hong Kong, Delhi, San Francisco and Singapore, each one shaped around the people, culture and community of that location.
Assemble was brought in to help develop that approach, taking the ideas, momentum and emotional resonance of the British Museum launch and translating them into a global campaign experience that could flex, evolve and adapt from one location to the next.
Together, we defined what should remain constant across every location and where opportunities existed to celebrate the people, partnerships, achievements and character of each local community.
Most importantly, these events were never intended to be celebrations of the past alone. While the bicentenary provided the backdrop, the focus was always firmly on the future. The events helped audiences understand not only what UCL has achieved over the last 200 years, but what it hopes to achieve over the next 200, and the role its global community can play in making that future possible.
Guest management formed a key part of the experience. We coordinated invitation strategies, managed attendee communications, oversaw registration and provided detailed attendance reporting following each event. This not only created a seamless guest journey but also ensured valuable engagement data could be captured and shared with the wider UCL team.
What made the series particularly special was the way each event reflected its location. Unique venues, local stories and tailored content helped create experiences that felt designed specifically for each audience. At the same time, carefully curated campaign messaging, visual content and community stories connected guests back to the wider campaign narrative.
Whether in New York, Beijing, Hong Kong, Delhi, Paris or San Francisco, guests were not simply attending a local alumni event. They were becoming part of a global movement connected by a shared belief in UCL’s future.
As trust grew, so did our role, allowing us to support everything from strategic planning and creative development through to operational delivery and global coordination.
Looking back, one of the most rewarding aspects of the programme was the relationship that developed between the teams involved. Over time, it became less about client and supplier and more about a shared commitment to achieving the campaign’s goals. Across countries, venues and time zones, we worked together as one team, learning from one another and continually building on previous successes.
The result was not simply a series of events, but a shared effort to bring an ambitious vision to life on a global stage.
As the campaign continues, the role of these events is evolving. The focus is no longer simply on launching the campaign in new locations, but on finding fresh ways to bring the story to life, maintain momentum and keep communities connected to the ambition behind it. The challenge now is one of reinvention: building on what has been successful while ensuring each new experience continues to feel relevant, distinctive and meaningful to its audience.
That work is ongoing, and it reflects something UCL understood from the outset. These events are not celebrations of what has already happened. They are moments that invite people to consider what could happen next.
For Assemble, the programme remains a powerful example of what can happen when events are viewed not as standalone occasions, but as part of a wider journey.
The story began at the British Museum. The global series carried it around the world. The next chapter is about keeping that story alive, ensuring each new gathering continues to create belief, strengthen relationships and inspire people to play their part in UCL’s next 200 years.
More from the project.
In their words
“Working with Assemble on the launch of UCL’s Here, it will happen campaign was a genuinely exciting experience. We had an ambitious creative vision and a complex programme to deliver, and the team brought the imagination, expertise and energy to help us realise it.
Throughout the process, Assemble combined brilliant creative thinking with impressive attention to detail, helping us translate our ambitions into engaging and memorable experiences. They challenged us constructively, worked incredibly closely with our teams and really understood what we were trying to achieve.
The result was a series of high-quality experiences that captured the spirit of UCL and created a real sense of excitement and connection among our alumni and supporters. We’re hugely proud of what we achieved together.”
