The University wanted to create an experience that would celebrate academic achievement while fostering a genuine sense of belonging among a diverse international audience. Working in partnership with the Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement team, Assemble Events helped shape and deliver an event that reflected both the University’s global reach and the role London continues to play in its identity.
Assemble was brought in not simply to support delivery, but to help shape the thinking behind the event, reviewing previous years, identifying opportunities and developing a creative concept that could elevate the experience while remaining practical and achievable.
The University’s Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement team had already built a successful annual celebration, with a strong understanding of their audience and of the elements alumni particularly valued. For 2026, they had identified a number of opportunities and practical challenges to work through as they considered how the event might evolve.
A further challenge was making use of event spaces within Senate House that hadn’t previously been used for the Alumni Celebration. This required careful thinking about how the different areas could work together, how guests would move between them and how the experience could still feel connected and coherent throughout the evening.
Accessibility was another important consideration, particularly for alumni travelling internationally to attend. The ambition was to make the event more affordable without compromising the quality of the experience, which meant thinking carefully about the format, catering and where investment would have the greatest impact for guests.
There were creative and programming questions too. The team wanted the evening to feel premium but relaxed, celebratory and social rather than formal. They were keen to rethink the established ‘Meet the Academics’ element so that academic content could feel more naturally integrated into the evening, while also building on the London theme that guests had responded to so positively the previous year.
Underpinning all of this was the need to create an experience that felt welcoming and relevant to the diverse backgrounds and experiences represented within the University of London’s global alumni community, creating space for people to celebrate, reconnect and make new connections.
Assemble’s role was to work alongside the team to help bring these different considerations together. We added an external perspective to their existing experience and audience insight, exploring creative possibilities, testing ideas and helping develop a concept and approach that could respond to their ambitions while remaining practical and achievable.
This creative platform informed thinking around content, environment, storytelling and programming. Alongside the celebration itself, we explored ideas including lighter-touch ways of integrating academic presence, interactive installations, stronger social moments and opportunities for alumni to share their own connections to London and the University.
For us, the project was a good example of how our role often extends beyond event management alone. Sometimes the most valuable contribution is helping clients shape the idea before delivery begins.
A live jazz band helped create the atmosphere, while the photo booth added another informal and playful element, giving guests an opportunity to capture the evening and enjoy themselves together. These lighter touches were an important part of creating an experience that felt premium without feeling formal.
Content was deliberately kept short so that it complemented, rather than interrupted, the social atmosphere. A single alumni voice brought a powerful personal perspective to the programme, while academics joined the celebration and engaged with alumni informally throughout the evening. This lighter-touch approach allowed academic connection to remain part of the experience without asking guests to step away from the main celebration.
The library exhibition offered another point of interest and an opportunity for guests to engage with the University in a different way, adding a sense of discovery without making the programme feel overly structured.
Behind the scenes, Assemble worked closely with the University team across event management, venue planning, suppliers, catering, production, branding and signage, volunteers, speaker support and on-site delivery. The result was an evening with enough structure and content to give it purpose, while leaving plenty of space for people to talk, reconnect, make new connections and simply enjoy being together.
Perhaps most importantly, the event created a strong sense of connection to the wider University of London community. As Maria Jose Tang, a graduate of BSc Business Administration with International Business, reflected:
Coming from Peru and being there in London, surrounded by people from so many different backgrounds and stories, made me realise that becoming part of the University of London alumni community is about so much more than finishing a degree. It’s about the people you meet, the shared experiences you carry with you, and the global network you now belong to.
It felt both grounding and exciting at the same time — grounding in recognising how far I’ve come, and exciting in knowing that this is just the beginning. I’m incredibly proud to now be part of such a diverse and driven community, and genuinely looking forward to what’s ahead.

That sense of looking forward is important. The purpose of the celebration wasn’t simply to reconnect alumni with their university experience, but to strengthen a community that can continue to connect, contribute and create impact together.
For Assemble, the event was also a great example of what can happen when creative thinking and practical delivery are considered together. Working closely with the Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement team, we were able to help translate the ambitions for the event into an experience that felt distinctive, inclusive and authentically University of London.
The work undertaken for 2026 was never simply about creating a successful evening. It was about helping establish a direction for future events, creating a clearer narrative, a stronger sense of identity and a more inclusive approach to engaging a global alumni community.
For Assemble, the project also reflects something we value deeply in our work with universities.
The most successful alumni events are never just celebrations. They are opportunities to strengthen connections between people, ideas and institutions, deepen alumni’s sense of belonging and demonstrate the meaningful role graduates can continue to play in the life and future of their university.
Working alongside the University of London’s Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement team allowed us to help shape an experience that felt more inclusive, more distinctive and more reflective of the University’s global community.
The Alumni Celebration demonstrated that when people feel welcomed, represented and part of something bigger than themselves, they become more than attendees. Over time, those stronger connections can create opportunities for alumni to become advocates, supporters, mentors and ambassadors, contributing to the University’s community and its future in many different ways.
Because the strongest alumni communities are not built through nostalgia alone. They are built when people come together around a shared belief in what they can achieve next.

In their words
“Working with Assemble has been a genuinely collaborative experience. The Assemble Events team took the time to understand our objectives, our alumni community and the experience we wanted to create. They brought creativity and fresh thinking to the process, while remaining practical, responsive and focused on delivery. Their support helped us develop an event that felt distinctive, welcoming and right for the University of London and our graduates.”
